While the PlayStation 5 generation is now well established, some gamers are still using their old PlayStation 4 console. For those considering upgrading to the new generation, Sony currently offers a simple solution: trade in your old console for a discount on the purchase of a PS5.
This initiative, offered via PlayStation Direct in partnership with BackMarket, allows PS4 owners to benefit from a trade-in voucher of up to 150 pounds sterling. But the offer will only remain available for a limited period.
A reduction of up to £150
The principle of this operation is relatively simple. Players can send in their old PlayStation 4 to get an estimate of its value. Once the console is accepted, they receive a trade-in voucher to use towards the purchase of a new PlayStation console. In some cases, the total value of the reduction can reach £150.
For example, a PlayStation 4 Pro in good condition can be estimated at approximately £100. An additional bonus of £50 is then added for players who use this amount to purchase a PlayStation 5. In this specific case, a PS5 Digital Edition sold for approximately £429 could return to £279 after reduction.
Several PS5 models affected
Another advantage of this offer: players are not limited to a single console model. The trade-in voucher can be used for different products available on PlayStation Direct. Players can choose between:
- a PS5 Digital Edition
- a standard PlayStation 5
- a PS5 Pro
- a console accompanied by an additional DualSense controller
Sony also says the offer can be used for certain accessories, like the PSVR2 virtual reality headset. Of course, the exact value of the recovery will always depend on several criteria, including:
- the model of the console
- his general condition
- its storage capacity
- the presence of accessories such as controllers
A limited time offer
Interested players will need to act quickly, however. Sony specifies that this recovery operation will remain available until March 31 at 11:59 p.m. GMT. Estimates can be made directly on the PlayStation Direct platform, where users can check the approximate value of their console before shipping it. Delivery is also shown as free for players participating in the offer.
An initiative intended to accelerate the transition to the PS5
This operation is likely part of a broader strategy to encourage gamers to upgrade to the new generation of consoles. Even though the PlayStation 5 has been available for several years, part of the community still plays on PS4.
Sony could therefore seek to accelerate this transition, especially as future exclusive games designed only for the PS5 approach. Some rumors already suggest the arrival of the PlayStation 6 around 2027, but for many players, the PS5 still remains the main platform for enjoying the new features. In this context, a trade-in offer can be a quick and easy way to take the plunge.
