PlayStation takes disruptive step by testing dynamic pricing on the PS Store

Here Ouigo

PlayStation seems to be experimenting with dynamic pricing. This is a process that we know very well in the food sector for example, or transport, when purchasing a train or plane ticket, based on a logic of supply and demand, on the geographical region, the time of day, the purchase history, etc.

PS Prices price tracker site, has noticed unusual changes in the PlayStation API regarding the pricing of its digital store. The heart of the discovery lies in the appearance of the IPT_PILOT and IPT_OPR_TESTING identifiers contained in these offer structures. The site adds that “these experimental prices are only displayed to certain user segments selected by Sony”.

Sony would conduct A/B tests, that is to say, offer several versions of the same product by changing one or more criteria (here the price) to see which one suits the consumer best, on more than 190 games across more than 70 regions around the world, including the United States, the brand’s largest market. These tests started in November 2025 and have not stopped since, even concerning the biggest in-house PlayStation games, such as Astrobot, God of War Ragnarok Or Helldiverse 2.

In Germany, for example, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 underwent a test of a drop of 12.5% taking it from €79.99 to €69.99. The same game, on the US store, was identified at -20.1%, which corresponds to $55.89 instead of $69.99. A much more significant drop. And in addition to first party games, we find titles from major publishers like 2K Games, Rockstar, Bethesda, with Mafia: Old Countryof Red Dead Redemption 2 and of DOOM: The Dark Ages.

Until then, note that we have talked about base prices, but that experience also affects promotional prices. The advantage of buying digitally, in addition to saving space and immediacy, lies in the fact of counting on promotions all year round, ultimately reducing hundreds of interesting titles occasionally to sometimes derisory sums.

Except that this compass is also doomed to be disrupted. This is how Helldiverse 2during the February sales, showed -25% almost everywhere, apart from participants in the PlayStation experience who were entitled to -56%. If from an individual point of view, this system is not necessarily a disaster, questions about regulation and market balance arise.
