Sony continues to improve the player experience on PlayStation 5. The Japanese manufacturer has announced the deployment of a new system software update which introduces an improved version of PSSR technology. The update is being rolled out gradually starting March 16. Players should have access to it in the coming days, depending on Sony’s distribution schedule.
A PS5 update that improves PSSR technology
This new version of the system software introduces an improvement to PSSR, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. This technology is designed to improve image quality in games using an upscaling technique based on artificial intelligence. After installing the update, a new option called “Improved PSSR Image Quality” appears in the console’s video output settings. Players can access this option in the “Screen & Video” section of the PS5 menu.
Sony explains how enhanced PSSR works
“PSSR is an AI library that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel when enhancing graphics. With this latest development, image reconstruction is more accurate, motion stability is improved, and developers have greater flexibility to optimize performance and visual fidelity on PS5 Pro. This improved version of PSSR demonstrates our commitment to evolving the PS5 Pro experience. Now, most new PS5 Pro titles will be compatible with this optimized version of PSSR, ensuring players continued improvements in image quality and performance.” This development aims in particular to improve image reconstruction and movement stability in compatible games.
Several PS5 games will benefit from the improved PSSR
Some titles will already benefit from this graphical improvement. Among the games cited by Sony are Crimson Desert, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Monster Hunter Wilds and Silent Hill f. These games should benefit from better image quality thanks to optimized PSSR technology. Other titles are also affected by this development, notably Alan Wake 2 and Control Ultimate Edition.
Resident Evil Requiem will be the first game to use this technology
Sony also confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem will be the first game to take advantage of the enhanced PSSR. The objective is to offer better visual quality while maintaining good performance. This technology should also make the work of developers easier, who will be able to more easily optimize their games for the PS5 Pro. The gradual rollout of the update means that some players might have access to it immediately, while others will have to wait a few days before it is available on their console.
