Nintendo Switch 2: a free function switches to subscription very soon

The Nintendo Switch 2 continues to add new features to the Nintendo ecosystem. Among the new features introduced with the console is GameChat, an integrated function allowing players to chat with friends directly from the console. However, this free feature won’t stay free forever. Nintendo has confirmed that GameChat will soon become a service reserved for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.

GameChat, the voice chat function of the Nintendo Switch 2

During the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025, Nintendo highlighted several important new features. Among them is GameChat, a feature built into the console system that allows players to chat with their friends while playing. This feature allows you to create voice chats with several participants directly from the console.

GameChat can accommodate up to 12 users simultaneously, making it easy to chat during multiplayer sessions. The arrival of an integrated voice chat system represents a notable change for Nintendo. The manufacturer’s previous consoles offered much more limited solutions for communicating with friends.

Nintendo is finally catching up with its competitors

For a long time, Nintendo was late in terms of the social features offered by its consoles. The Nintendo DS already offered a form of voice chat, but it remained limited to certain games. The Wii and Wii U also offered some communication options, but they were relatively rudimentary.

With the first Nintendo Switch, players even had to use a mobile app to chat with their friends online. Conversely, competing consoles have offered built-in voice chat for many years. On Xbox, for example, this type of functionality has existed since the New Xbox Experience update launched on Xbox 360 in November 2008.

GameChat will become paid from April 1

To encourage players to discover this feature, Nintendo decided to offer GameChat for free during the first year of the Switch 2. This free period is now coming to an end.

Starting April 1, 2026, GameChat will be integrated into premium features of the Nintendo Switch Online service. Concretely, this means that only players with an active subscription will be able to use the voice chat integrated into the console.

For players already subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online, this change should not pose any particular problem. On the other hand, those who do not use this service will now have to take out a subscription to continue chatting with their friends during their games.

A feature in competition with Discord

Even though GameChat provides an official solution for chatting with friends on Switch 2, some players are already using other tools. Discord, for example, remains a very popular platform for communicating during gaming sessions. Available for free on PC and mobile, this service allows you to create voice rooms and easily chat between players.

GameChat nevertheless has a specific advantage on Switch 2. The functionality notably allows you to directly share your game screen with your friends, an option difficult to reproduce with Discord without additional hardware. It remains to be seen whether this feature will convince enough players to justify its integration into the Nintendo Switch Online service.
