Open-world RPG Crimson Desert is nearing release and the first technical reviews are starting to appear. One of the most anticipated comes from Digital Foundry, known for its in-depth testing of video game performance. According to their analysis, the PlayStation 5 Pro version of the game developed by Pearl Abyss offers a particularly impressive experience, even if certain technical details still need improvement.
Three graphics modes available on PS5 Pro
The near-final version of Crimson Desert tested by Digital Foundry features three distinct graphics modes. Players can choose between Performance mode, Balanced mode, and Quality mode. These modes allow the experience to be adapted according to the player’s priorities, whether they favor fluidity or visual quality.
All of these modes use ray tracing, although the intensity of this effect varies depending on the mode selected. This technology improves the management of light and reflections, which helps to reinforce the visual realism of the game.
PSSR technology improves the image in 4K
Crimson Desert also uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology, known as PSSR. This technology uses artificial intelligence to improve image quality and produce 4K rendering.
According to Digital Foundry, this solution works effectively to improve the overall sharpness of the image. However, some small visual defects may be observed in certain situations. It is important to note that the version used in the test corresponds to the current version of PSSR and not the PSSR 2.0 update that Sony plans to roll out soon.
Processor-related limitations in certain areas
Despite the overall solid performance, Digital Foundry also noticed some technical limitations. Particularly busy areas, such as busy cities or combat involving many characters, may cause temporary drops in frame rates. “are never enough to make the game feel poorly optimized. The signs are encouraging — and for PS5 Pro owners, Crimson Desert certainly delivers a phenomenal experience.”
An imminent release for the Pearl Abyss RPG
Crimson Desert will officially release on March 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X/S. The game follows the story of Kliff and the Greymanes in the world of Pywel, a region mired in political tension and internal conflict.
After an attack by the Black Bear faction, the group’s survivors are dispersed. Kliff must then find his companions and rebuild the Greymanes before facing their enemy. With its ambitious open world and promising performance on PS5 Pro, Crimson Desert could become one of the most impactful RPGs of the year.
