Since its release in 2020, the PlayStation 5 has received countless updates, features, and peripherals. But certain essential settings remain largely ignored by users. This is particularly the case of a network tip that can transform the gaming experience, especially if you use the PlayStation Portal. This tip comes from a knowledgeable Reddit user, and might just solve the connection issues many players are having.
The PlayStation Portal, launched at the end of 2023, allows you to stream your PS5 games to a portable device via Wi-Fi. Problem: despite a good internet connection, many players complain of cuts or slowness. A recent discussion on Reddit highlighted a simple solution to this recurring problem.
The Wi-Fi tip shared by an experienced PS5 player
It was the user Arcanaismeans who revealed this little-known configuration, in response to another player – MinorFX – who asked for advice on how to take full advantage of his new PS5 Pro. In the comments, Arcanaismeans explains that some advanced console network settings can radically improve the connection, provided you have the right equipment.
“If you have a Wi-Fi 6e router, on your PS5, check the advanced settings of your Wi-Fi network and make sure it is configured to only use the 6 GHz network”
A seemingly innocuous adjustment, but which changes everything according to him. “This increased my download speed and made the PlayStation Portal finally usable for the first time in over two years.”
What concrete effects on the network performance of the PS5?
Before activating this option, Arcanaismeans clarified that its remote reading was far from smooth, even with a wired connection. “On my base PS5, whether connected via cable or not, remote play was poor, and I didn’t imagine that my already fast downloads over Wi-Fi could be even faster.”
Since the transition to the 6 GHz network, the situation has changed radically: stable streaming, increased speed and reduced latency. This frequency, used only by Wi-Fi 6e, offers better bandwidth and less interference, especially in dense urban areas.
How to activate the 6 GHz option on your PS5?
Please note, not all routers are compatible. You must have a Wi-Fi 6e model (and not just Wi-Fi 6). If you have one, here’s how to do it:
- Access your PS5’s network settings
- Select your current Wi-Fi network
- Open advanced options
- Force frequency to 6 GHz if available
- Restart your console to apply the changes
This small tweak could make a big difference, especially for PlayStation Portal users or those who stream, install big games, or regularly share their games.
