Even by reducing the scale of the game, it could not be saved
Alix Wilton Regan was one of the first surprised by this cancellation, given that for her part, things seemed to be progressing well. In this interview, the actress states that she was involved in the project from 2023, with many lines recorded in 2024 and work that extended until 2025, including motion-capture. She even states that entire chapters were ready on this side :
“ We were recording bits and pieces of things throughout 2023. We also did a lot of performance capture in 2024, and we even recorded other things in 2025. To my knowledge, we were quite advanced. I had completed my work on entire chapters of this universe. »
She adds that the executives were happy with the project, although she admits that she doesn’t really know if the development of the game itself was far enough along. According to her, The Initiative did everything to save the game, especially in another form, perhaps less ambitious (probably in negotiations with Take-Two):
“ I couldn’t say too much because I knew The Initiative was in talks to keep Perfect Dark in production in some form. Maybe a lite version, maybe something a little different. But it’s certain that everyone was working hard behind the scenes to bring Perfect Dark back. And then one day, I learned from the creative director that the agreement had not come to fruition, that everything had fallen through and that production was definitively stopped. »
A real shock for the entire team linked to the project, as well as for Alix Wilton Regan. Fortunatelythe latter was able to bounce back quite quickly to the extent that she had already been hired as the new Lara Croft for the next two tomb Raider. Which doesn’t stop him from being afraid of losing a big role like this again:
“ What saved me when Perfect Dark flopped was that I had already been working on my role of Lara for about a year. I played Joanna on one side, and Lara on the other, which was wonderful and truly one of the most creatively stimulating times of my life. I was so relieved to still have Lara, but I was also really afraid of losing her. I’m still afraid of losing Lara. »
We hope for her that the story will end a little better this time, even if with Crystal Dynamics, nothing is ever certain anymore.
