Ubisoft buys the game March of Giants, a MOBA that was in development at Amazon Game Studios

Homecoming for some developers

This is undoubtedly one of the strangest takeovers of recent times. March of Giants is now no longer under the umbrella of Amazon Game Studios, but under that of Ubisoft. The French publisher here gets its hands on this MOBA as well as the entire team in charge of the project, which suits it well since it is based in Montreal, where Ubisoft already has a strong presence.

In addition, the company recovers some of its talents here. Xavier Marquis, creative director of the title, is also known for having been in charge of Rainbow Six Siegewhile Alexandre Parizeau was the general manager of Ubisoft Toronto.

Ubisoft says it wanted to get its hands on this particular game because it would be a “ innovative and different, with the potential to deliver a distinct experience to existing MOBA fans, attract new audiences and become a successful live competitive game. 98% of alpha respondents said March of Giants brought something new to the genre. “. Yves Guillemot adds:

March of Giants is a real opportunity to bring something new and dynamic to gamers, and help Ubisoft compete in one of the biggest industries in gaming. We look forward to welcoming back Alexandre, Xavier and several experienced members of the March of Giants team, who previously worked at Ubisoft. The ambition, creativity and talent of the entire team align perfectly with our desire to create bold new experiences for players. We look forward to supporting them in the development of this promising new license. »

It remains that this acquisition is more than strange at a time when Ubisoft is in the middle of restructuringwith subdivisions that are not yet very clear and defined and layoffs that are still fresh (but there is obviously still magic money for acquisitions). The financial details surrounding this transaction are not specified. At least the project is saved and can continue its development, after an alpha described as successful, and Amazon will continue to support the game remotely via marketing support on Twitch.
