Large video game productions today require increasingly long development cycles. In this context, it becomes logical that major projects find themselves aligned with the next generation of consoles. This is precisely the case with Cyberpunk 2, pre-production of which only recently started. Such a phase involves several years of prototyping, tool creation and technology preparation, making the 2028–2030 window very likely.
The studio had already encountered the technical limits of old-gen consoles during the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. Targeting only the PS6 and the next Xbox would avoid a similar situation, while taking advantage of much more efficient hardware.
CD Projekt RED between two behemoths: The Witcher 4 first, Cyberpunk 2 then
If Cyberpunk 2 is progressing slowly, it’s because it is not the priority project. The studio is focusing its resources on The Witcher 4, currently in advanced production. A smaller team is dedicated to preparing Cyberpunk 2, which will expand once the main project stabilizes.
The Witcher 4 could be released on PS5 and Xbox Series before later getting a version optimized for PS6. This strategy reinforces the idea that Cyberpunk 2 would only be designed for the next generation.
2027–2028: the most likely window for the PS6 and the new Xbox
Even though Sony and Microsoft have not made anything official, technology cycles indicate a likely release within the next three years. Studios are starting to adjust their schedules around this estimate. Modern open world ambitions require more robust architectures, which places Cyberpunk 2 as an ideal candidate to embody the power of the future PS6.
A development that fuels players’ impatience
Despite the wait, interest in Cyberpunk 2 does not wane. The turnaround of Cyberpunk 2077 has restored confidence around the studio. Fans of narrative RPGs see this project as an opportunity to take full advantage of the next generation of consoles.
If the PS6 were to truly host one of the first major games of the coming decade, Cyberpunk 2 would already be a symbol of the transition to the new era of gaming.
