A cult Zelda is now playable for free, here’s how to take advantage of it

Players nostalgic for the GameCube era now have an unexpected alternative. While Nintendo continues to keep fans waiting for a Switch port of The Wind Waker HD, an independent developer is offering an experience playable for free online. Baptized Wind Waker Threejsthis project created by Robin Payot allows you to explore the Great Sea from a simple web browser, on PC or mobile.

A fan-made version playable without installation

The project is based on a technical recreation inspired by the original visual style of the game. Thanks to modern web technologies, it is possible to control Link’s boat and navigate freely on the ocean. In the main mode titled “Explore the Ocean”, players must:

  • Collect sunken treasures
  • Accumulate the best possible score
  • Avoid the barrels scattered on the water

Several iconic islands are visible in the distance, although it is not possible to explore them on foot. It is also possible to customize Link’s appearance, a small detail that reinforces the charm of the experience. This isn’t a full port, but rather a playable demo focused on navigation, one of the standout elements of the original game.

A bonus arcade mini-game

In addition to free exploration, a second mode called “Rupee’s Game” offers an arcade experience inspired by endless runners. The principle is simple: travel a predefined maritime route, collect rubies and avoid obstacles. The whole thing is reminiscent of some modern mobile games while retaining the iconic cel-shading aesthetic. A photo mode is also present, allowing you to capture landscapes and save images locally. However, this feature still seems to have some technical issues.

An alternative to the lack of a Switch version

Released in 2002 on GameCube, The Wind Waker has established itself as one of the most popular episodes of the Zelda saga, notably thanks to its bold artistic style and its unique navigation system. A remastered version, The Wind Waker HD, then arrived on Wii U with several gameplay comfort improvements. Since then, fans have been hoping for a port to Nintendo Switch, which has still not materialized.

In the meantime, the original GameCube version remains accessible via the Nintendo Switch Online expansion pack subscription. The Wind Waker Threejs project obviously doesn’t replace the full experience, but it makes for a fun technical curiosity for a short break, whether in the office or at home.
