Fans of Half-Life and older multiplayer mods may have a reason to delve back into the past. More than twenty years after its first appearance, Zombie Panic! returns with a new version available directly on Steam.
This cult mod of the first Half-Life proposed a simple but extremely effective concept: a team of survivors had to accomplish an objective while another team, made up of zombies, tried to prevent them.
Zombie Panic!, a cult Half-Life mod
Around the time of its original release, Zombie Panic! was one of the most popular multiplayer mods in the Half-Life community. The principle was based on an asymmetrical confrontation. Survivors had to cooperate to achieve a specific objective, often linked to the evacuation or defense of an area.
The zombies, for their part, were tasked with eliminating the survivors before they could accomplish their objective. A particular mechanic made the games even more unpredictable: when a survivor died, he returned to the game in the form of a zombie. This system gradually transformed eliminated players into new enemies, which increased the tension throughout the rounds.
The return of the game to Steam after more than 20 years
After years of absence, Zombie Panic! is now back in the form of a modernized version available on Steam. The developers announced this release by explaining: “After more than two decades, we are very proud to announce that the classic modification of the survival horror Zombie Panic! is now available on Steam! »
This new version marks the official arrival of the mod on the Valve platform. It is based on restoration work on the original content while adding several technical improvements.
The creators of the project also highlighted the help provided by the community in bringing the game up to date. “We would like to thank everyone who contributed and tested the mod over the past year, providing lots of new content, feedback, and fixes that helped us shape this 1.0 release on Steam. »
A modernized version with new features
The Steam version of Zombie Panic! includes several improvements intended to modernize the gaming experience. Many maps present in the original version have been restored. Players can also take advantage of the Steam Workshop, which makes it easy to add community-created content. This new edition also offers new characters, new weapons, improved animations, a modernized user interface and Steam achievements.
A free game but with a condition
Zombie Panic! can be downloaded for free on Steam. However, one condition remains necessary to play it. The mod requires you to own a copy of the Half-Life game. This Valve title is often offered at a heavily discounted price during Steam promotions and has even been offered for free in the past. With its asymmetrical multiplayer concept and its heritage from the Half-Life community, Zombie Panic! could attract both nostalgic gamers and those who want to experience a piece of PC mod history.
