Microsoft is already preparing the next generation of consoles. The new management of the company’s gaming division has confirmed the existence of a long-rumored project: Project Helix. This code name designates the future Xbox console which will succeed the current generation.
The announcement came directly from Asha Sharma, recently appointed head of Microsoft Gaming following the retirement of Phil Spencer, a historic figure in the Xbox brand. In a message published on her official account, she confirmed several important elements concerning this new machine.
Microsoft officially confirms the Helix project
The new leader of Microsoft Gaming mentioned this project during a message addressed to the Xbox teams. It confirms not only the code name of the console, but also the brand’s ambition for its next generation of hardware.
She explains: “Great start to the morning with the Xbox team! We talked about our commitment to the return of the Xbox, particularly with Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console.” This statement constitutes the first official confirmation of this project, which had already been circulating for several months in the form of rumors in the video game industry.
A console capable of launching Xbox and PC games
The most notable feature of Project Helix concerns its compatibility with PC games. Microsoft seems to want to bring the console and computer worlds even closer. Asha Sharma confirms this goal in her message: “Project Helix will deliver exceptional performance and play your Xbox and PC games.”
If this feature is confirmed in the final version of the console, it could profoundly change the Xbox ecosystem. Players could then access a much larger library, including both Xbox titles and part of the PC catalog.
This strategy is part of Microsoft’s overall vision, which has for several years sought to bring its platforms closer together via services like Xbox Game Pass and cross-platform gaming.
A more detailed presentation expected at GDC
Even if the first information is starting to emerge, Microsoft has not yet revealed the full technical characteristics of its future console. Asha Sharma indicates, however, that new discussions will take place very soon with partners and development studios. She specifies: “I look forward to discussing this in more detail with our partners and the studios during my first GDC next week!”
A new step for Xbox strategy
The arrival of Project Helix comes at an important time for the Xbox brand. After several years marked by the development of services like Game Pass and the expansion on PC, Microsoft seems to want to continue the integration of its different platforms.
Compatibility with PC games could be a major development for Xbox consoles. It would reinforce the idea of a single ecosystem where players can access the same titles on multiple devices.
For the moment, Microsoft has not communicated a release date or precise technical details for Project Helix. The company’s upcoming announcements, however, should give a clearer idea of the direction the next generation Xbox will take.
