Xbox hits hard: 37 free games to try for the holidays, here are the games not to be missed

While the end of the year is often dominated by AAAs and commercial reviews, Xbox chooses another path: that of discovery. From December 11 to 31, 2025, players can download 37 independent game demos for freeon Xbox consoles, PC and compatible portable devices. This initiative is part of the program ID@Xboxa showcase dedicated to independent creators, often overshadowed by blockbusters.

With this event called ID@Xbox Indie Selectsthe American brand offers a new field of expression for numerous studios from all over the world. A way of reminding us that innovation in video games does not always depend on colossal budgets.

37 free demos, only available until December 31

The concept is simple but effective: each demo is available for immediate download via the Microsoft Storewith no registration or subscription required. These trial versions, limited in time, allow you to test part of the final game, often during development. “Most demos represent pre-release versions and may differ from the final version, including regional availability, as developers continue to refine their games,” Xbox said.

Among the titles offered, we find a wide diversity of genres: roguelikes, narrative games, puzzle games, simulations… Some notable names from the selection:

  • Aikyam – Two-player cooperative game on console
  • Boxes: Lost Fragments – Exploration and puzzles
  • Pathology 3 – Sequel to a cult game, between horror and surrealism
  • Master Lemon: The Quest for Iceland – Absurd colorful adventure
  • Rebooted – Comic and committed platformer

Each game remains accessible until December 31, 2025date on which all demos will be removed from the platform pending their official release.

An essential showcase for emerging studios

Microsoft’s stated objective is clear: to provide a space of visibility for young video game talents. “To highlight a host of incredible upcoming indie games, Xbox is hosting an event through its ID@Xbox program.” A strategy consistent with the inclusive philosophy of the program, which has already enabled games like Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 to make themselves known before their critical consecration.

Developers see it as a rare opportunity to collect feedback directly from players. As Xbox indicates, these versions may still include bugs or unfinished elements, but their goal is to test the potential, ergonomics, and interest of the gameplay with the public.

A strategic operation before 2026

A few weeks before the new year, this event also takes place in a context of strategic positioning for Xbox. By highlighting independents, the brand distinguishes itself from its competitors and strengthens its position as a platform open to creativity. On a marketing level, the operation is also clever: it generates traffic on the store, stimulates future pre-orders, and builds a brand image that goes against the grain of traditional commercial logic.

For players, it’s a unique opportunity to discover gems before anyone else, without paying anything. And for the studios, an exceptional international showcase. A smart way to end 2025 with sharing, exploration… and curiosity.
