Until recently, the Xbox application only allowed you to remotely download a game… provided you already own it. A limitation that users considered incomprehensible, especially compared to competing platforms.
With the December 2025 update, Microsoft finally enables a crucial feature: direct purchase of games and digital content from its mobile app. Now, whether you’re on the move or seated away from your console, you can browse the Xbox Store catalog, purchase, then launch the remote installation in just a few clicks. “Honestly, it’s quite disconcerting that Microsoft took so long to add this basic feature, but as they say, better late than never”
An improved interface for smoother navigation
Beyond this flagship new feature, the update enriches the user experience with new filters in the integrated store. It is now possible to sort games by categories: promotions, free or popular titles.
A “comfortable” advance, as highlighted by the first feedback on social networks, which brings the Xbox application closer to the standards established by Sony on PlayStation or Valve on Steam.
Notable audio improvements for the Xbox headset
Another welcomed novelty: the update introduces a Bluetooth low energy mode for the official wireless headset. The latter allowsincrease autonomywhile offering two additional options: a high-fidelity audio mode and the ability to share audio between two devices (previewed in Xbox Preview). “Is there a chance the update will also be available for the original Xbox headset? »
Expectations remain high despite this progress
If this update marks a real turning point for the Xbox app, reactions show that players’ expectations are far from being met. “Please provide the ability to deactivate Copilot; no one wants to be forced to use AI” Microsoft now seems more responsive, but will need to maintain this momentum to close the gap with its competitors.
