What if buying a game on PS5 soon allowed you to also play it on PC, at no additional cost? This is what a recent leak on the PlayStation Store, spotted by Twitter user yAmethxst, suggests. According to his information, new symbols are being integrated, announcing a potential “cross-purchase” mode between PlayStation 5 and Steam.
On a shared capture, we can clearly see the mentions of “PS5/PC games” as well as “echo mode”, without us yet knowing the exact meaning. This development evokes the period of the PS3 and PSP, where certain purchased titles were automatically available on several devices.
Dealabs, often well informed about the PlayStation ecosystem, also confirms this lead via its own sources. A PS5/PC dual purchase feature would indeed be under study, according to information relayed by GameSpot. Nothing has yet been officially confirmed, but the signals are converging.
Is Sony finally changing its PC strategy?
Until recently, Sony limited PC releases to a few exclusives arriving late after their console launch. But with Helldivers 2, the Japanese giant has clearly reached a milestone: simultaneous release on PS5 and PC, total cross-play… and a warm reception from the public.
In his review, Sam from GAMINGbible wrote: “Playing Helldivers 2 almost feels like returning to the golden age of online gaming; it’s pure, slightly crazy, cooperative fun that offers an experience suitable for all types of gamers, whether you’re looking for something casual or your next big challenge.”
Microsoft, for its part, has already largely opened the borders, by offering titles like Forza Horizon or Gears of War on other platforms. Could Sony follow in its footsteps? The hypothesis of a single PS5/PC purchase would greatly facilitate this opening without calling into question its exclusive ecosystem.
What players can hope for… or not yet
If the cross-purchasing system becomes reality, it would bea major change in PlayStation policy. As of yet, no games have been explicitly announced as compatible with this feature. But with the symbols detected and the consistent echoes from several reliable sources, the trail is more serious than a simple rumor.
Should we hope to see God of War or The Last of Us land on Xbox? Probably not. But a native gateway between PS5 and PC, particularly via Steam, would allow Sony to consolidate its user base without offending brand purists.
While awaiting formalization, these leaks show that the closed model of the PlayStation could soon evolve. And this time, PC gamers could be the first beneficiaries.
