“Easily changing PS5 settings can save users a huge amount of storage space.” And yet, very few players know that their console automatically records a video every time they unlock a trophy. A function activated by default… and completely dispensable.
On a machine where available disk space is limited (around 667 GB usable), this kind of automation can make the difference. Here’s how to spot, disable or adjust this option and easily free up several gigabytes.
PS5: each trophy generates a video… without you knowing it
“What happens every time a trophy is unlocked? Well, the game records a small clip of gameplay.” Over five years of gaming, that could add up to hundreds or even thousands of video clips stored on your console. These extracts are often in high resolution, sometimes around thirty seconds each. If you’ve never cleaned this folder, chances are it’s taking up several gigabytes unnecessarily.
The first step is therefore simple: delete all these unnecessary clips. To do this, you need to go to the menu Media > Capture gallerythen manually delete the trophy-related videos. A somewhat tedious operation, but which can free up several dozen gigabytes in a few minutes.
How to disable automatic trophy saving on PS5
The second step is to completely disable this feature in the settings. “Turn off auto-saving to save your PS5’s internal storage space.”
Here is the procedure to follow:
- Go to Settings from the home screen
- Select Captures and broadcasts
- Then Trophies
- Disable the “Automatically save videos when unblocking” option
From then on, your PS5 will no longer record any clips when unlocking a trophy, which will save you from unnecessary accumulation of video files.
You can also customize the captures according to your preferences
If you still want to keep certain symbolic sequences (for example, Platinum trophies), the PS5 also allows you to finely adjust this functionality:
- Clip duration : change from 30 seconds to 10 seconds
- Type of trophies recorded : only save Platinum or Gold trophies
- Video resolution : lower the quality to reduce file size
These options are found in the same place in the “Captures and broadcasts” settings, and allow an interesting compromise between memories and storage savings.
A small adjustment that can really change everything
This type of adjustment seems trivial, but it can have a real impact on your comfort of use. “It’s a really simple way to subtly improve your storage space; it might just make the difference in allowing you to download that extra game you’ve been wanting.”
Rather than buying an external hard drive or deleting a game you might be playing again, this setting helps you save space without losing anything essential. A simple, free tip, and far too often ignored.
