PS Plus: Clair Obscur, Borderlands 4… several blockbusters already playable for free, go for it

Since December 22, 2025, subscribers to the PS Plus Premium service can access new, particularly attractive free trials. Among them, several heavyweights from the year 2025, offered in their complete trial version for a limited time. “PS Plus offers free trials of the biggest games of 2025.”

Sony seems to want to restore value to its Premium formula, long criticized for content deemed uninteresting. With this end-of-year update, the manufacturer is highlighting an often forgotten feature: trial versions, which allow you to test the biggest upcoming games before their official release or purchase.

Clair Obscur and Borderlands 4: the stars of the December tests

The title that attracts the most attention this month is undoubtedly Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33available as a two-hour free trial. Expected to be one of the most ambitious RPGs of next year, this game with its striking visual style offers subscribers the opportunity to immerse themselves in its universe before anyone else.

Other addition of weight: Borderlands 4which also benefits from a two-hour trial version. This fourth episode promises an avalanche of crazy weapons and frenetic combat, faithful to the spirit of the saga. “All your progress (including trophies) during free trials of PS Plus Premium games is carried over to the full version.” One more reason to dive into it without restraint.

A more generous selection than usual

In addition to these two flagship titles, the December selection also includes:

  • Astroneerthe famous space exploration game, in a two-hour trial version (PS5 port planned for 2025)
  • Varletwith two hours of free testing
  • Kill It With Fire 2offered as a one-hour trial

The trials can be downloaded or streamed directly. “You can also stream the essays instead of downloading them.” A welcome option to avoid waiting before playing.

A Premium formula finally lives up to expectations?

For several months, criticism has been raining down on PS Plus Premium. Some players even had the feeling that the subscription was gradually losing its substance. The discreet removal of all PSVR2 compatible games has notably raised eyebrows: “The PSVR2 games have all been removed without explanation.”

By adding attempts at real blockbusters to its offering, Sony seems to want to correct the situation. This strategy could well convince the undecided to subscribe – or remain subscribed – to a formula that has so far been seeking legitimacy.

An evolution that began in November

The trend had already started the previous month, with the arrival of exclusive demos for several titles expected in 2025 such as Mafia: The Old Country, Ready or Not Or Lost Soul Aside. This desire to highlight upcoming releases could turn into a major asset for PS Plus Premium, provided this level of quality is maintained in the months to come.
