The remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time never had a smooth ride. Initially announced in September 2020 by Ubisoft, the project excited nostalgic fans of the PS2 trilogy. But very quickly, delays pile up. Scheduled for January 2021, the title was postponed several times, until being removed from the release schedule.
Faced with criticism and expectations, Ubisoft chose to restart development by entrusting the project to a new studio. In its most recent financial report, the publisher nevertheless confirmed that the game would be released “before April 2026”.
A credible rumor about the date of January 16, 2026
The most plausible date has just been put forward by Tom Henderson, a well-known figure on the Insider Gaming site. During a recent podcast, he indicated that the remake would now be scheduled for January 16, 2026. Information which, according to several sources close to the matter, corresponds to the internal objective at Ubisoft.
This schedule would reinforce the hypothesis of an unveiling at the Game Awards 2025, which will take place on December 12. Some fans are expecting a trailer with great fanfare. Others imagine a more discreet announcement, without opening pre-orders, to better surprise as the holidays approach.
The return of a video game monument
Released in 2003 on PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox and PC, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time marked a generation. The game laid the foundation for dynamic storytelling in action-adventure games. Using the dagger to turn back time remains a vivid memory for many.
The official synopsis retains all its original poetry: “Amid the scorched sands of ancient Persia, a legend is woven in an ancient language.” A sentence that sets the tone. Ubisoft adds: “It evokes an era marked by blood and ruled by deception. Drawn by the dark powers of a magical dagger, a young prince is led to unleash a deadly evil on a magnificent kingdom.”
An expectation tinged with nostalgia
For many players, this remake will not be just a simple return. It will represent a journey to a time when narrative games were experienced almost like animated tales. Since the original release, over twenty years have passed. But the magic seems intact.
It now remains to be seen whether Ubisoft will dare to relaunch its franchise on a large scale or whether it will be an isolated homage. Anyway, the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is real – and it’s fast approaching.
