PlayStation shuts down Dark Outlaw Games studio, founded last year by Call of Duty veteran

The mobile sector is also affected by layoffs

If the name Jason Blundell rings a bell, it’s because he worked on the franchise Call of Duty for many years. After leaving this enormous ship, he wanted to found his own studio with Deviation Games, while moving closely to Sony and PlayStation. This first adventure ended badly since the game exclusive to the PS5 in preparation within the studio was canceled, and Deviation Games closed immediately in 2024.

Not angry though, Jason Blundell and PlayStation agreed to create Dark Outlaw Games in 2025. A studio best described as being second-party (incubation), even if Blundell described it as PlayStation Studios (which Sony did not really recognize) which was working on a new license… until today.

The information first came from ResetEra before being confirmed by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg. Dark Outlaws Games has reportedly been shut down by PlayStation. His project will not see the light of dayand we could bet that it was a service game, given Blundell’s pedigree. This time, after two failures, the divorce should be finalized, and it is difficult to imagine the birth of a third studio after such a fiasco. When it doesn’t want to…

And the layoffs don’t stop there, since around 50 people linked to mobile game development are fired at the same time. Here again, this shows Sony’s desire to move away from markets that it does not control, after years of investing in the field.
