In recent weeks, there have been several signs that the PlayStation ecosystem is evolving rapidly. Sony’s decision to close Bluepoint Games and information regarding the manufacturer’s PC strategy suggest a turning point for the future of the PS5.
For several years, Sony had started publishing certain PlayStation games on PC. Major titles like God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Horizon Zero Dawn have been ported to this platform. This strategy could now come to an end.
PlayStation closes Bluepoint Games after several major projects
The first notable change concerns Bluepoint Games. The studio, known for its remasters and remakes, officially closed its doors in March 2026. Bluepoint had been involved in several important projects for PlayStation. The studio stood out with titles like Uncharted The Nathan Drake Collection, Shadow of the Colossus and especially Demon’s Souls, one of the PS5 launch games.
After the release of Demon’s Souls, the team also supported Santa Monica Studio during the development of God of War Ragnarok. Bluepoint then worked on a live-service God of War game project. This project was ultimately canceled. The studio would have tried to propose other ideas to Sony, including a remake of Bloodborne highly anticipated by players. None of these projects was ultimately validated.
Sony could stop porting its PS5 games to PC
The other major change concerns PlayStation’s PC strategy. For about six years, Sony has gradually ported several PlayStation exclusives to PC. This initiative aimed to reach a new audience and extend the commercial life of its games.
According to information reported by Bloomberg and sources close to the matter, Sony no longer plans to publish its future PS5 games on PC. Certain highly anticipated titles should therefore remain exclusive to the console. Among them would be Ghost of Yotei, Saros and Marvel’s Wolverine.
Several reasons would explain this change in strategy
Several factors could explain this turnaround. Sales of some PlayStation games on PC have reportedly been lower than Sony’s expectations. Executives also reportedly believe that these games earn more when sold directly on PS5.
Other elements would also have influenced this decision. The requirement for PC players to create a PlayStation Network account to access certain games has reportedly attracted criticism. Sony could also seek to protect the identity of the PlayStation brand by retaining certain exclusives on its console.
The video game industry is entering a new phase
These changes take place in a broader context of transformation of the video game industry. Several large publishers have recently modified their organization or their strategy. Xbox has reshuffled its management following the retirement of Phil Spencer. Ubisoft has also adjusted its management team for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The closure of studios and the evolution of distribution strategies show that the industry is going through a period of adjustment.
