For the upcoming remake of “Ghost in the Shell” the use of generative AI is deliberately avoided. The team confirmed that the production is being implemented entirely without appropriate technologies. We summarize.
Studio deliberately avoids AI
During the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market, director Mokochan (Toma Kimura) spoke with producer Kohei Sakita about the creation of Science SARU’s new “Ghost in the Shell” series.
Kimura expressly emphasized that no generative artificial intelligence would be used in production. The aim is to create an anime series drawn entirely by humans in order to reflect the central message of the work behind the scenes.
Since “Ghost in the Shell” deals intensively with humanity and the relationship between humans and machines, it was particularly important to the team that every creative step was carried out by humans.
A lot of effort for an authentic world
Producer Kohei Sakita also spoke about the production process and explained that many drawings were created on a larger scale than classic anime productions. This makes it possible to ensure that even the smallest details are displayed.
The team also paid particular attention to the design of the futuristic world. The original plan was to design all street signs individually.
However, due to the far too much effort involved, they ultimately decided on specially developed characters that were reminiscent of kanji but actually had no meaning.
The new anime adaptation will be based more closely on the original manga template by Masamune Shirow and will launch worldwide on Prime Video on July 7, 2026 – also with German dubbing.
