In Los Angeles, on the night of December 11 to 12, 2025, the spotlight of the Game Awards 2025 focused on an unexpected team. Sandfall Interactive, a studio based in Montpellier, dominated the ceremony by winning 9 awards out of 12 nominationsan absolute record for a first production. It’s hard not to notice them on the red carpet, dressed in striped sailor tops and red berets, a nod to the Belle Époque style of their game. “This outfit was supposed to be a joke,” laughed Guillaume Broche, CEO of the studio.
A first game, a masterstroke
It’s not just the staging that left its mark, but the studio’s extraordinary journey. “We didn’t know how to make a game before,” confided Guillaume Broche with emotion when receiving the game of the year prize. Created from scratch by a passionate team, Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 is an RPG with a demanding combat system, anchored in a Belle Époque universe as poetic as it is brutal. Never has a first work shone so brightly in twelve editions of the Game Awards.
Free DLC to thank players
In the wake of this consecration, the studio chose to thank its community with an unexpected update. “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 says ‘thank you’ to its players”, headlines Linternaute. And this thank you takes the form of Free DLC available today. “Soberly titled ‘thank you’, this update includes new fights, new areas, new music and a few little surprises,” specifies the site. Enough to extend the experience with gentleness… and surprises.
A dive into the hero’s past
Fans of the game will be able to explore a new side of the main character, Verso. “The ‘thank you’ update allows players to explore ‘Verso’s drafts’ when he was young and dreaming of colorful adventures.” An intimate and narrative touch that fits perfectly with the DNA of the game: sensitive, daring, and resolutely original. Sandfall Interactive confirms that it has not said its last word.
