A new free Pokémon game makes its surprise release date official on Switch

While it was initially due to be released in April 2026, Pokémon Champions has finally confirmed its precise date: April 8. Announced as a free game for Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, this new title developed under the aegis of The Pokémon Company takes a radically different approach from the main episodes. Here, no open world exploration, no ambitious narrative scenario. The objective is clear: to offer an experience focused exclusively on combat.

A return to competitive fundamentals

Pokémon Champions strongly recalls the spirit of old arena fighting games like Pokémon Stadium. The gameplay is based on direct clashes between teams, without a traditional progression phase or massive collection of creatures.

  • Free play
  • Ranked game
  • Private part

This structure confirms the competitive ambition of the project. Players wishing to refine their strategies will be able to confront it in an environment dedicated to tactical performance.

Extensive compatibility with the Pokémon ecosystem

One of the most anticipated points concerns compatibility with Pokémon Go and Pokémon Home. Players will be able to transfer their existing creatures to Pokémon Champions, provided they are supported by the game. This system opens the door to true competitive continuity between the different titles in the franchise. In addition, the game will be compatible with certain physical Play! events. Pokémon, strengthening its esports positioning.

An economic model that questions

Pokémon Champions will adopt a free-to-play model. The trailer mentions a “free to start” plan, which suggests the presence of microtransactions. A Starter Pack has already been presented. This would include:

  • Extensive storage space
  • Additional music
  • Tickets usable for various objects and services

The exact scale of in-app purchases is still unknown.

A strategic alternative while waiting for the sequel

Pokémon Champions could become an excellent training ground while waiting for Pokémon Winds & Waves, scheduled for next year. In the main games, artificial intelligence often remains accessible. On the other hand, online battles reveal the full strategic depth of the Pokémon battle system.

For players wishing to test their skills in a more demanding setting, this new title could well become a benchmark. Pokémon Champions will be available on April 8 for Nintendo Switch and mobile.
