After almost a decade of waiting, the cult Wolfenstein franchise seems ready to take up arms again. According to cross-revelations from Windows Central and Kotaku, Wolfenstein 3 is indeed in development. Although this is not yet an official announcement, several sources close to the matter confirm the information. This third opus would extend the story of BJ Blazkowicz, a hero who has become iconic, and would fill a void that fans have felt since 2017.
Since Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, the main series has remained on hold. Spin-offs like Youngblood (2019) or Cyberpilot (VR exclusive) have not convinced the public, and many consider that they have not brought a sequel worthy of the name to the saga.
MachineGames at work, alongside Indiana Jones
It is to MachineGames that we owe the rebirth of the Wolfenstein license in 2014 with The New Order, then The Old Blood and The New Colossus. The studio is currently working on the highly anticipated Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, scheduled for 2026. But according to current rumors, a parallel team is already at work on Wolfenstein 3.
The Swedish studio has proven its mastery of muscular and scripted narrative FPS. The anticipation around a new episode centered on BJ Blazkowicz is immense, especially since fans are hoping for a real return to the intense, violent and spectacular formula that made the reputation of previous titles.
A launch that would coincide with the Amazon Prime series
The rumor gains even more weight with the mention of a television series in preparation at Amazon Prime, based on the Wolfenstein universe. The hypothesis of a coordinated launch between the series and the video game reinforces the idea of a close release, or even an imminent revelation orchestrated by Bethesda.
This type of transmedia strategy is increasingly common in the industry. The recent example of Fallout or The Last of Us proves that synergies between games and series can relaunch a franchise with a wider audience.
Likely release on Xbox Game Pass and yet another Microsoft exclusive?
Since the acquisition of Bethesda by Microsoft, logic would dictate that Wolfenstein 3 be included in Xbox Game Pass upon its release. Nothing has yet been confirmed at this stage, but immediate availability on the service would be a considerable strategic asset for Microsoft, at a time when the exclusivity war is in full swing.
If the official announcement will not be long, one thing is certain: Wolfenstein 3 represents much more than a return. This is a chance for the series to reconnect with its past glory and once again conquer demanding FPS fans.
