Epic Games Store: The 12th Free Christmas Game is a Fan-Loved Retro RPG

Developed by High North Studios, SKALD immerses players in a dark fantasy adventure on the cursed island of Idra. After a shipwreck, the hero wakes up on a beach infested with corpses and ancient secrets. The scene is set: Lovecraftian atmosphere, cryptic quests and dangers in every corner of the box.

The gameplay is based on turn-based tactical combat, in the purest tradition of old-fashioned role-playing games. Each member of your team has their own stats, motivations and classes. The game offers an increase in power up to level 20, with great freedom of customization.

A visual style straight from the 80s

SKALD does not try to hide its origins: its aesthetic is reminiscent of games running on Commodore 64. Dark colors, raw pixel display, minimalist interface… everything is designed to revive nostalgia. Purists can even activate a CRT filter, simulating cathode ray tube screens.

But behind this retro exterior hides a modern engine, with practical functions like a clear inventory, a quest log and automatic combat resolution for those who prefer storytelling to confrontations.

A free gem, but for a very short time

Available for free download since December 28 at 5 p.m., SKALD: Against the Black Priory will only remain available for 24 hours. After this period, the game will become paying again, replaced by the 13th title of this winter operation which extends until January 1, 2026.

To get it, simply connect to the Epic Games Store via the website or launcher, go to the game page and click “Get”. Once in your library, it’s yours forever.

A calendar that spoils fans of narrative games

Epic Games has opted for an eclectic selection this year. If the blockbusters are present (Callisto Protocol, Disco Elysium), the independents also take center stage with titles like We Were Here Together, Cassette Beasts or Paradise Killer. A way to introduce original experiences to a wide audience during the holidays.
