The PlayStation 5 DualSense controller is renowned for its advanced technology, but it is not spared from frequent problems like stick drift or stubborn dirt under the buttons. Rather than having it repaired or buying a new controller, you can try a simple operation at home, without risk if you are well equipped.
The tools needed before starting disassembly
Before any handling, make sure you have the appropriate equipment. Here’s what you need to open and maintain a DualSense controller:
- A Phillips #00 screwdriver
- A pick or flat plastic tool to separate the shells
- Cotton swabs or cotton balls
- Isopropyl alcohol (or alcohol wipes)
- A can of compressed air
- A microfiber cloth
These tools are available in precision kits for electronics, often at low prices. The investment quickly pays off if you have several controllers to maintain.
How to properly disassemble the DualSense
Disassembly begins with the lower black part of the controller, located under the analog sticks. Gently insert a pick into the gap between the two shells, then gradually pry to release the clips.
As a tutorial cited by BGR states: “Use the pick between the center trim and the bottom shell to remove it, focusing on the bottom corners of both sides of the controller and the center piece near the headphone jack.”
Once this trim is removed, you can access the screws that hold the shell. Remove them one by one then carefully lift the upper part. Be careful not to force: some internal parts are sensitive.
Deep cleaning: dust, residue and precautions
With the inside of the controller exposed, start by using the can of compressed air to blow out any accumulated dust. Then, use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean the visible areas, without touching the circuits or cables.
Warning: do not use alcohol on the colored buttons, as this may damage the paint. Use a soft, dry cloth for these sensitive parts. Clean the contours of the sticks, the triggers, and the contacts gently. Typically, a single cleaning session is enough to eliminate response issues or spurious movements.
Close the controller and test: a simple solution that can change everything
Once cleaning is complete, all that remains is to screw the elements back on, replace the shells and reclip the black trim. Turn on your PS5 and test each function of the controller: left stick, right stick, triggers, touchpad, speaker…
Although this operation does not resolve all serious cases of drift, it often helps avoid a costly repair or unnecessary replacement. A well-maintained controller is a controller that lasts.
