Your PS5 controller no longer works? Here’s how to fix it yourself at home

The PlayStation 5 DualSense controller is renowned for its advanced technology, but it is not spared from frequent problems like stick drift or stubborn dirt under the buttons. Rather than having it repaired or buying a new controller, you can try a simple operation at home, without risk if you are well equipped.

The tools needed before starting disassembly

Before any handling, make sure you have the appropriate equipment. Here’s what you need to open and maintain a DualSense controller:

  • A Phillips #00 screwdriver
  • A pick or flat plastic tool to separate the shells
  • Cotton swabs or cotton balls
  • Isopropyl alcohol (or alcohol wipes)
  • A can of compressed air
  • A microfiber cloth

These tools are available in precision kits for electronics, often at low prices. The investment quickly pays off if you have several controllers to maintain.

How to properly disassemble the DualSense

Disassembly begins with the lower black part of the controller, located under the analog sticks. Gently insert a pick into the gap between the two shells, then gradually pry to release the clips.

A well-maintained controller is a controller that lasts.
