A rumor launched on social networks by the Nintendeals account is shaking the community of Zelda fans. With a simple message posted on December 9, “a remake of Zelda”, this account specializing in video game tips suggested that a surprise announcement could take place during the Game Awards 2025. Nothing official, but enough to revive all the speculation around a long-awaited return of a cult episode of the franchise.
The Game Awards, scheduled for December 11, constitute a fertile ground for major revelations, even if Nintendo often prefers its own events to communicate. This has not stopped fans from dreaming, especially since several clues suggest that a remake could indeed be in the cards.
Zelda, a franchise accustomed to remakes
The Legend of Zelda saga is not its first attempt in terms of remakes. In 2019, Nintendo entrusted Grezzo, already involved in several remasters of the series, with the modernization of Link’s Awakening on Switch. More recently, the studio worked on Echoes of Wisdom, proof that the firm continues to trust its partners to revisit its cult catalog.
For several months, the names Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons have been coming up repeatedly in specialized forums. These two episodes released on Game Boy Color have never been entitled to a modern reissue, and their complementarity makes them an ideal target for a simultaneous 2D remake. Some fans are also hoping for a return of Ocarina of Time or A Link to the Past, regularly mentioned as soon as a remaster is in sight.
An announcement at the Game Awards, or later?
If Nintendeals’ teasing is on point, Nintendo could choose the Game Awards as a showcase for its next remake. This would not be the first time that a major player in the industry has taken advantage of this event to surprise. However, the Japanese publisher has often favored its Nintendo Directs for its major announcements, as was the case for Tears of the Kingdom.
Another plausible avenue: the expectation of a more symbolic event. In 2026, the Zelda saga will celebrate its 40th anniversary. The occasion would be ideal for a retrospective, collection or anniversary remake. In 2020, Nintendo marked the 35th anniversary of Super Mario with several announcements. It would therefore be logical that the same attention be paid to Link and his adventures.
Why a remake rather than a new game?
With the recent release of Echoes of Wisdom and Tears of the Kingdom, it seems unlikely that Nintendo will unveil a new main game any time soon. A remake would maintain interest without saturating the market. The franchise has always managed to maintain a balance between new releases and reinterpretations, with modernized titles every two to three years.
Fans will probably have to wait until the evening of December 11 to find out if the Twitter prophecy comes true. Until then, the collective imagination continues to work: faithful 2D remake? Remastered in 3D? Return of a forgotten masterpiece? All theories are allowed… and hoped for.
