A portage carried out in pain
We had to wait more than an additional year to have the right to play the remake of System Shock on a Nintendo console, but Nightdive Studios has a good excuse. He wanted to ensure that this port ran properly on the first Switch, which was a major challenge.
In a developer diary, we learn that the question of switching to Unreal Engine 5 is what blocked the team, before a solution was found to guarantee that the game could run on Unreal Engine 4 on Switch. The studio does not hesitate to compare its port to that of The Witcher III and that of DOOM on the Nintendo console, in order to make it clear that the game has been optimized despite the difficulty:
“ We think fans will be very pleased with the performance and platform-specific features we’ve built into these ports of System Shock for Nintendo consoles. Nightdive’s goal was to offer a port of System Shock that matched technical feats such as DOOM (2016) and The Witcher III on Nintendo Switch. »
The remake of System Shock will therefore be available from December 18 on Nintendo Switch 1 and 2.
