Eidos Montreal announces that it is letting go of 124 people, including studio director, David Anfossi

As Embrace a troubled future

It was on the studio’s LinkedIn profile that the painful announcement was made. 124 positions eliminated due to “ the evolution of needs linked to projects” with mainly “ repercussions on production and support teams“. For almost 2 years, many studios have been closed and nearly 8,000 employees in total around the world have been dismissed from the ranks of the juggernaut Embracer Group, owner of Eidos Montreal since 2022, including previously more than 180 at Eidos Montreal alone in several waves.

But that’s not all, because in addition to the seismic announcement of the elimination of nearly 30% of the remaining workforce of the Canadian studio (the studio now only has around 250 employees according to internal sources), a significant departure is also being made in parallel, that of the studio director, David Anfossi.

Eidos Montreal announces a reduction in its workforce as well as the departure of its studio director, David Anfossi.
This workforce reduction, which affects 124 employees, is the result of changing project needs and has repercussions on the production and support teams.
This is a difficult day for our studio, which reflects the need to adapt and focus our efforts where Eidos-Montreal can be most effective.
We are deeply grateful to the team members involved; this decision in no way reflects their talent, dedication or performance.
Supporting those affected with care and respect remains our priority, while ensuring continuity for the teams in the future.
Furthermore, after many years at the head of the studio, David Anfossi and Eidos-Montreal are also separating.
We thank David for his contribution and wish him the best for his future projects.
A transition plan is underway, and new information will be communicated as soon as new management is in place.
Today, however, our priority is to support our colleagues.

Previously at MegaBlocks then Ubisoft, the now ex-director of the studio, in office since 2013, was the executive director of Deus-Ex: Human Revolution after his arrival at Eidos Montreal in 2007. He will therefore leave his position following this new phase of layoffs. A strategic departure presented as by mutual agreement, but which questions the temporality, at a pivotal time for the studio which is not officially on any new proprietary project and with an ever more fragile parent company. No information on the future of the studio’s management was discussed.

Previously rumored to be developing a new game Deus Ex then a new “AAAA” license, Eidos Montréal is actively working on the co-development of Fable with Playground Games as well as monitoring Grounded 2 alongside Obsidian Entertainment. The studio has recently produced titles like Shadow of the Tomb Raider or even Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. We obviously share all our thoughts and our support to the employees affected by this new wave of departures.
