Pokémon Champions arrives April 8 on Switch and Nintendo Switch 2

The School of Pokémon Champions

Unlike classic RPGs in the license, Pokémon Champions focuses exclusively on clashes between trainers. The title adopts a free-to-play model with in-app purchases allowing you to acquire cosmetic elements (music, costumes for trainers, etc.), improvements (such as increased storage space) or even a Premium Battle Pass. However, it should be noted that no advantage (“Pay to Win”) dedicated to combat is present.

The gameplay builds on the well-known foundations of the series with types, talents, abilities and other advanced strategies. The battles take place turn-based, in 1vs1 or 2vs2 formats, with emblematic mechanics such as Mega-Evolution. Obviously, the main interest of the game is to be able to compete online. This goes through two main modes:

  • Ranked matches: these will allow you to climb the rankings against opponents of a similar level.
  • Friendly matches: classic duels without stakes.

A private lobby system will also be available to compete against friends, accompanied by seasonal competitive events with specific rules.

With an improved version on Switch 2

The game introduces several ways to build your team. You will be able to connect your data via Pokémon HOME and recover certain Pokémon from Pokémon GO, Pokémon Flash & Violet or even Pokémon Legends ZA. However, the system is subject to several restrictions (see image below).

It will also be possible to recruit Pokémon directly in the game randomly or via a currency called Victory Points (VP), which will also be used to improve their statistics, their abilities or even their nature. It will even be possible to obtain Mega Evolution stones with this currency.

Pokémon Champions will be released first on Switch on April 8 and later in the year on mobile. Moreover, Nintendo Switch 2 players will be able to benefit from a free update which will offer sharper graphics rendering.
