Nintendo surprised everyone. Without major announcement or official presentation, the Japanese firm has quietly added a new GameCube game to its Nintendo Switch Online service. An arrival which is not insignificant, as the title concerned is appreciated by fans.
As of March 18, 2026, expansion pack subscribers can now play Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. This emblematic game thus joins a still limited catalog, which until now only included eight GameCube titles available on the platform.
Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness comes to Nintendo Switch Online
Originally released on GameCube, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness has established itself as a separate episode in the Pokémon license. Unlike the classic opuses, it offers a darker adventure, centered on obscure Pokémon and a more marked narrative.
Its arrival on Nintendo Switch Online is not entirely a surprise. Nintendo had already confirmed its addition for the month of March. What is more intriguing is the way in which the game was made available, without any special communication. Players who have been waiting for this title can now access it immediately through the GameCube app, provided they have the right configuration.
Limited access to the Switch 2 and the Expansion pack
Not all players will be able to take advantage of this new feature. Nintendo has implemented strict conditions for accessing GameCube games on its service. These titles are only available on the Nintendo Switch 2. Owners of the first Switch cannot therefore access them, even with an active subscription.
Another important restriction: it is necessary to subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online expansion pack. This premium plan also gives access to Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy and Sega Genesis games. This strategic choice limits access to these retro games, but reinforces the appeal of the offer for the most committed players.
More GameCube games expected in the coming months
The arrival of Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness is just one step in the deployment of the GameCube catalog on Switch Online. Nintendo has already announced other major titles. Among them, Pokémon Colosseum is in a good position. Its direct connection to Gale of Darkness makes it a logical candidate for an upcoming release. Super Mario Sunshine is also expected, although no specific date has yet been announced. In the coming months, Nintendo could further detail its plans, notably during an upcoming Nintendo Direct. The publisher could then unveil a more complete roadmap for 2026 and beyond.
Nintendo is banking on nostalgia to enrich its offering
With these progressive additions, Nintendo is capitalizing on a powerful lever: nostalgia. GameCube games hold a special place in gamers’ hearts, and there’s immediate interest in their return. By gradually enriching its catalog, the Japanese firm is maintaining attention around its online service. Each new release becomes a small event, capable of boosting subscriber engagement. Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness perfectly illustrates this strategy. Between surprise, waiting and access constraints, his arrival does not go unnoticed.
