The anime adaptation of “Witch Hat Atelier” not only delights fans in front of the screens, but also seems to involve a remarkably high production effort behind the scenes.
Enormous production effort
The Japanese voice actress Rena Motomura, who lends her voice to the protagonist Coco in the anime adaptation, revealed in the television show “SHIBUYA ANIME BASE” that up to 20,000 animation drawings were made for the fifth episode of “Witch Hat Atelier”.
For comparison, she explained that a regular anime episode usually only contains around 3,000 to 5,000 drawings. The number mentioned caused great surprise even among the show’s moderators.
Additionally, Motomura explained that the storyboards for this episode were also of exceptional scope. According to her, they were so thick that they resembled a telephone book.
Sophisticated adaptation
In the fifth episode, an action scene with Qifrey and Agott in particular received a lot of attention. Although the corresponding passage in the manga only covers a few pages, it was significantly expanded in the anime and developed into one of the most impressive animation sequences in the series to date.
Director Ayumu Watanabe had previously described the implementation of “Witch Hat Atelier” as a demanding task and even spoke of a “reckless undertaking” in relation to the significantly increased scope of work.
The 13-part anime adaptation of “Witch Hat Atelier” ran in simulcast on Crunchyroll from April 6th to June 22nd, 2026 with German and Japanese language versions. Let us know in the comments how you liked the series!
