While many thought that Cyberpunk 2077 had turned the page after its expansions, CD Projekt Red has just created a surprise. A new project linked to the game universe has been made official, but it will not take the form expected by players.
Announced for 2026, Cyberpunk 2077: Chrome Rush marks an unexpected turning point for the license. It is neither a DLC nor a sequel, but an arcade game developed in collaboration with the Chinese manufacturer UNIS Technology.
Cyberpunk 2077 Chrome Rush, an arcade game inspired by Road Rash
With Chrome Rush, CD Projekt Red explores new territory. The game offers an arcade racing experience, mixing speed and real-time combat. Players compete on motorbikes in environments directly inspired by Cyberpunk 2077, with iconic locations like Corporate Plaza or the Badlands. The experience is not limited to running, since it is possible to attack your opponents with weapons or melee blows.
The game features seven playable characters, including different versions of V, as well as eight distinct motorcycles and several tracks. Everything is designed to be played on an arcade machine equipped with two physical motorcycles, reinforcing the immersion.
An exclusive arcade release that is already divisive
Contrary to what many hoped, Chrome Rush will not be available on consoles or PC. The game is exclusively intended for arcades. The first units could be deployed as early as May 2026, but their availability will depend on local facilities. This decision severely limits access to the game, particularly for players who do not have easy access to this type of infrastructure. Some fans have already been able to test the terminal during an event in Las Vegas, but for the majority, the experience will remain difficult to access.
Cyberpunk 2077 continues to expand its universe
This project is part of a broader CD Projekt Red strategy. Despite the absence of new downloadable content for Cyberpunk 2077, the license continues to develop in different forms. After the success of the Phantom Liberty expansion and the Cyberpunk Edgerunners series, the studio is increasing its initiatives. A collectible card game was recently funded in minutes, proof of the continued strong interest in the franchise. Other projects are also in the works, including a sequel to the main game and a new anime season.
A license that evolves well beyond traditional games
With Chrome Rush, Cyberpunk 2077 shows that it can exist outside of classic formats. By venturing into arcade, CD Projekt Red is exploring new ways to bring its universe to life. This approach makes it possible to reach a different audience, but it also raises questions about the accessibility of these experiences. Not all players will be able to enjoy this new content, despite their attachment to the license. Between diversification and frustration, Chrome Rush illustrates a new direction for Cyberpunk 2077, well beyond initial expectations.
