A new 2D animation series based on Square Enix’s popular video game “Final Fantasy IX” is currently listed as “in development” on the official website of the French animation studio EuroVisual Studios. We summarize.
Ten episodes planned
According to the entry, the series with the working title “Final Fantasy: Black Mages Legacy” is initially planned for ten episodes, each with a running time of around 22 minutes. The focus is on the children of the character Vivi Ornitier, whose story takes place in the city of Alexandria.
Back in 2021, Square Enix and Cyber Group Studios decided to jointly produce an animated series for “Final Fantasy IX,” which was aimed specifically at children between the ages of 8 and 13. However, in April 2025, the French studio had to close due to bankruptcy.
It is not confirmed whether “Final Fantasy: Black Mages Legacy” is exactly that project. The participants in the production have not yet been announced. Of course, we will keep you updated as usual.
The “Final Fantasy” series was launched by Square Enix in 1987 and now consists of 16 main games as well as numerous films and animation projects that have been released on various platforms.
