Despite the enormous anticipation surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games remains very tight-lipped regarding the details of the game. Apart from two trailers, little official information has been revealed on the content or technical characteristics of the title. This lack of information has players speculating about several aspects of the game, and one of the most discussed topics concerns the file size needed to install it.
Players try to estimate GTA 6 file size
On Reddit, some fans have started sharing their estimates for how much storage space GTA 6 could take up. One player thus believes that the game could reach a very large size, while remaining within certain limits imposed by the physical versions.
He explains in particular: “No more than 300 GB, because that would require more than 3 discs. I think they want a real physical release, and I don’t see how we could use more than 3 discs.” Other players believe that Rockstar could succeed in limiting the game’s size through optimization.
One of them says: “GTA V was reduced to 90 GB with the enhanced version. So they seem to have the situation under control, and I think the card size will not be as large as the UE5 games, considering the size of the game. I am convinced that they will do some technical feat and fit it into 140 GB or less.”
Some estimates suggest nearly 200 GB at launch
Other estimates put forward by players are between 150 and 200 GB, which already corresponds to some particularly ambitious modern games. One user estimates, for example, that Rockstar could seek to keep the size of the game below 200 GB.
He explains: “I would say the size of the game at launch will be 195 GB. They will do everything possible to keep it under 200 GB, I think. But what will the final size be? After three years, with the online mode and the expansions, I can imagine it reaching 370 GB. Rockstar is really optimizing its games.”
Previous Rockstar games give a clue
To try to imagine the size of GTA 6, some players are turning to the studio’s previous games. Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V both exceed 100 GB, despite being released several years ago. Some modern titles also offer a point of comparison. The Call of Duty series notably reached downloads close to 200 GB at certain times.
Rockstar is, however, renowned for its optimization techniques, which could limit the final size of the game despite its ambition. Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled for release in November 2026, and we’ll likely have to wait until pre-orders open to find out the exact download size.
