Discussions around the next generation of consoles are intensifying. While the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series still dominate the market, several rumors already speak of the arrival of their successors. According to a renowned insider in the gaming hardware community, the PS6 and the future Xbox Project Helix console are still planned for release in 2027.
This information comes as tech giants face high demand for essential components like GPUs, RAM and memory chips. Massive investments in data centers for artificial intelligence have notably fueled concerns about possible delays in the production of new consoles.
PS6 and Xbox Project Helix could arrive at the end of 2027
The latest rumor comes from KeplerL2, an informer known for his publications on specialized forums. On the NeoGAF forum, he says: “The Xbox and PS6 are still planned for the 2027 holiday season.” If this information is confirmed, the two manufacturers would maintain a generation cycle relatively close to that observed previously.
The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S arrived around the same time. A release in 2027 would therefore correspond to a cycle of around seven years for this generation of consoles. For now, neither Sony nor Microsoft have officially confirmed these dates.
Project Helix, Microsoft’s new hybrid console
On the Microsoft side, several details have started to emerge regarding the next Xbox console. Known under the code name Project Helix, it is currently in development within Battlefield Studios. The first information suggests a hybrid device combining certain aspects of a traditional console and those of a PC.
This project was notably mentioned during the Game Developers Conference (GDC), where Microsoft confirmed that it was working on a new generation of Xbox hardware. The objective would be to offer a more flexible platform, capable of exploiting technologies close to the PC universe while retaining the console experience.
Sony is also preparing for the post-PlayStation 5
For its part, Sony has not yet made the PlayStation 6 official, but several statements from executives suggest that the next generation is already in preparation. The company has repeatedly indicated that the development of its future hardware represents a strategic priority. Sony is also rumored to be working on a PlayStation handheld console that could accompany the release of the PS6. This strategy would aim to expand the PlayStation ecosystem with several devices connected to each other.
Component shortages worry gaming industry
The question of availability of electronic components remains a central subject for the industry. Global demand for GPUs, RAM and memory has increased significantly in recent years, particularly due to the rise of artificial intelligence and data centers.
Some observers have suggested that these supply chain tensions could delay the release of upcoming consoles. For now, rumors suggesting a release of the new consoles in 2027 suggest that Sony and Microsoft could still respect their usual schedule for the next generation.
