Promotions on digital stores are generally simple: everyone gets the same price for a limited time. But it looks like Sony is now exploring a very different approach on the PlayStation Store.
For several days, some users have noticed that the prices of certain games change depending on whether they are connected to their PlayStation account or not. An unusual situation which could reveal a new dynamic pricing system currently tested by Sony.
A reduction that depends on the PlayStation account
Several players have reported that some popular titles appear at a different price depending on their account. In some cases, the difference can reach 17% off compared to the standard price. Among the games concerned would be:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarok
- Helldiverse 2
The phenomenon is particularly visible when users compare displayed prices connected to their account and browsing anonymously. This discovery quickly made the rounds on social networks and specialized forums.
Sony would test dynamic pricing
According to several observations from players and specialized sites, this price difference would be part of a test launched by Sony since the end of 2025. The objective would be to analyze the impact of purchase history and player behavior on game sales. Concretely, the PlayStation Store could adapt the prices offered to certain users based on different criteria:
- their purchasing habits
- games already owned
- their activity on the platform
This type of strategy is already used in other digital sectors, notably in online commerce or reservation platforms. But its arrival in video games is already sparking debate.
A practice that does not please players
From the PlayStation community, reactions are largely critical. Many players believe that this system creates a form of injustice, since some users benefit from additional discounts while others pay the normal price.
One of the main problems highlighted is the lack of transparency. Since Sony itself decides which accounts benefit from these discounts, there is currently no way to know how to benefit from it. For some players, this seems more like a lottery than a classic promotion.
A test limited to certain regions
At the moment, this system does not seem to be active everywhere. Several reports indicate that dynamic pricing is mostly being tested in certain regions:
- Europe
- Middle East
- Africa
- certain areas of Asia
On the other hand, North America and Japan would not be affected for the moment. Sony has not released any official statement on this test. It therefore remains impossible to know whether this strategy will be abandoned or, on the contrary, extended to the entire PlayStation Store in the coming months. If it becomes widespread, it could profoundly change the way players buy their digital games.
