As we approach the Game Developers Conference 2026Microsoft is starting to slightly lift the veil on its next generation of Xbox consoles. The future machine, currently known as Project Helixremains shrouded in mystery. But a message published on social networks by the team Microsoft Game Dev could well give a first glimpse of what awaits players. This teaser, consisting of a few photos of Xbox hardware accompanied by a cryptic message, immediately attracted the attention of the community.
Microsoft teases the next Xbox before GDC
On X (formerly Twitter), the official account Microsoft Game Dev shared three images showing different Xbox consoles along with the message: “Xbox at GDC. Preview. » This message, accompanied by a flame emoji and the hashtag #GDC2026clearly seems to announce an imminent revelation. At first glance, the consoles in the photos look familiar. Some strongly resemble already known models, in particular:
- the Xbox One
- a special edition Xbox One
But these devices are not classic consoles intended for the public.
Development kits hidden in familiar boxes
The images actually show Xbox development kits, recognizable thanks to the engraving “XDK” visible on the boxes. These machines are used by studios to develop and test games before their release. The fact that they look like old Xbox consoles is not unusual. Manufacturers often use existing enclosures to conceal experimental hardware. It is therefore possible that these machines actually contain much more powerful hardwareintended to prepare for the next generation of games. This could also confirm that some studios are already working on titles designed for Project Helix.
A disk drive could make a comeback
Another detail present in the images particularly caught the attention of fans. One of the visible consoles appears to have a disk player. This detail may seem trivial, but it rekindles an important debate around the future of consoles. In recent years, many manufacturers have pushed towards fully digital consoles. However, some players remain attached to physical mediain particular for:
- the game collection
- resale
- long-term storage
Although the drive seen in the photos is likely from an old Xbox One kit, some fans believe Microsoft could be testing two versions of its future console. A version with a disc player, and another entirely digital.
Project Helix should be presented very soon
As of now, Microsoft has not confirmed any official details regarding the configuration of Project Helix. But several pieces of information should be revealed very soon. There Game Developers Conference 2026which takes place this week, could be the opportunity for Microsoft to present the first concrete information on its next console. This conference ends on March 13, 2026which means players could soon discover:
- the first technical characteristics
- Microsoft’s strategy for the next generation
- and maybe even a preview of the first games
After several years dominated by Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5the industry already seems to be preparing for the next big console battle.
