Nintendo Switch 2 welcomes free game in 1440p 60 FPS, native version available

A new free game has just appeared discreetly on the Nintendo eShop, and this time it is not a simple backwards compatible port. Since February 17, 2026, Nintendo Switch 2 owners can download an optimized native version of a title already popular on the first Switch.

The game in question, Asphalt Legends Unite, was already playable on Switch 2 thanks to backwards compatibility. But this new version dedicated to the console offers significantly better performance. On the program: a resolution of 1440p in TV mode, 1080p in portable mode, and a stable refresh rate of 60 frames per second.

Asphalt Legends Unite comes native to Nintendo Switch 2

Developed by Gameloft, Asphalt Legends Unite is not unknown. This free-to-play racing game has already built a strong community across multiple platforms. Until now, the Switch 2 version relied solely on compatibility with the original Switch.

The novelty therefore lies in this optimized edition. The display increases to 1440p in TV mode, while portable mode reaches 1080p. Everything runs at 60 frames per second, an important milestone for a racing game where fluidity directly influences precision.

A free-to-play that can be played without paying

Asphalt Legends Unite adopts a free-to-play business model with integrated monetization. It is possible to play without spending money, but progress may take more time. This system is not new to the series. Since moving to the free-to-play model, the Asphalt franchise has continued to accumulate players. The figure is impressive: 1.7 billion cumulative downloads since the series’ debut. Because yes, Asphalt is not new. The first episode, Asphalt: Urban GT, was released in 2004, notably on Nintendo DS. Since then, the license has evolved, multiplied the platforms and refined its economic model.

Overall positive reviews despite few official reviews

In terms of professional ratings, Metacritic data remains limited, but the available aggregate score stands at 74. On the other hand, player feedback is more numerous. On Steam, Asphalt Legends Unite has an approval rating of 79%, putting it in the positive review category. This level of membership partly explains the longevity of the franchise. Few free-to-play series can boast such a lifespan and such a high volume of downloads.

A broader strategy around the Nintendo Switch 2

This release comes as several publishers are strengthening their presence on Nintendo Switch 2. Gameloft has also confirmed that it is working on a dedicated version of Disney Dreamlight Valley for the console. This will be paid, unlike Asphalt Legends Unite. For players on a limited budget, this arrival on the eShop represents an immediate opportunity. Access is free, performance is improved, and the experience can be tested without financial commitment.
