At the end of each year, Disney releases a new mainstream animated film for families. This time it is Zootopia 2 which hits the screens, almost ten years after the first opus won the Oscars. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde return for a new adventure through the bustling streets of Zootopia, with a mix of suspense, action and pop culture nods. But this sequel, although designed to please young and old alike, is it really suitable for all ages?
A film for all audiences… but especially recommended from 6 years old
In France, Zootopia 2 is officially classified “general public” by the CNCwhich means that it can be seen by everyone, without legal restriction. But in several countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom or Germany, the authorities suggest a minimum age of 6 years. A difference in perception linked to the presence of sustained action scenes, to a fast pace and certain dialogues built on cultural references that only adults can really grasp.
The story takes up the elements that made the first film successful, but in a sometimes a little darker atmosphere. Judy and Nick are faced with a menacing reptilian creatureevolving in the most remote corners of the animal city. Their duo is put to the test, and tensions rise. If the tone remains light and full of humor, a few moments of anxiety or surprise can impress the youngest spectators.
What parents really need to know
For children already familiar with the first Zootopia, this sequel should pose no problem. There is no graphic violence or inappropriate languageand the more intense sequences are quickly offset by animal gags and colorful animation. The film maintains a clear structure, with positive messages about teamwork, tolerance and friendship.
But for the little ones, especially under 5 or 6 years oldthe duration of the film (1h47) combined with the fast pace can make the experience a bit trying. In addition, some jokes or puns are clearly designed for an adult audience. This is not a “baby-friendly” film, but rather intelligent family entertainment, in the tradition of other Pixar and Disney classics.
French cinemas generally advise against any screenings before 3 years of age.apart from specific screenings suitable for toddlers.
A faithful but more ambitious sequel
Beyond the question of age, Zootopia 2 seduces by its ability to extend the universe without repeating itself. The duo formed by Judy and Nick gains depth, their relationship becomes more complex, and the city reveals new areas previously unexplored. The scenario features a therapy program for teammates in crisisan original idea which structures the story while providing a starting point for the detective intrigue.
Implicitly, the directors Byron Howard and Jared Bush inject a subtle critique of society, through an ever more inventive gallery of animal characters. Young spectators will see it as a thrilling adventure. Adults might read something else.
