In a recent interview, the management of Warner Bros. Japan presented their plans for a significant expansion of anime activities. We summarize the most important details for you below.
Warner Bros. is increasingly focusing on anime
Buddy Marini, general manager of Warner Bros. Japan, told Keizaikai that anime will play an even larger role in the company’s strategy in the future. Warner Bros. Japan is already involved in numerous well-known titles such as “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure”, “Record of Ragnarok” and “DanMachi”.
The company currently produces four to five anime titles per year, but they would like to increase this number even further in the future. The aim is to promote the international spread of Japanese creativity and to position anime even more strongly on the global market.
Warner Bros. Japan Vice President Kunio Yamada also emphasized the importance of new content for the global market. In addition to anime, around eight Japanese live-action films will also be produced annually in the future.
Further productions planned
Yamada also announced that it is currently working on projects for several Western brands that have potential for international success. However, he left it open which titles these were.
The US parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, whose takeover by Paramount Skydance Corporation has now been approved, had already announced in the past that it wanted to increase anime production to more than ten series per year in the long term. In this context, a partnership with WEBTOON was announced a few months ago.
With this strategy, the company is joining an industry-wide trend. Companies such as KADOKAWA, TOHO, Sony and CyberAgent are also currently investing more in new anime projects and expanding their production capacities.
