While rumor announces a PlayStation 6 for 2027 or 2028, a game released in 2020 resurfaces on the current console… and gets a second lease of life thanks to PlayStation Plus. For several weeks, subscribers have been rediscovering this remake of a FromSoftware classic, and opinions are unanimous: visually, it still buries a good part of the current catalog.
It’s not an easy title to access, but its artistic direction, its lighting effects and the fluidity of its gameplay are still impressive. For some, it embodies “real next-gen” better than most 2025 releases.
A remake that surpasses the original… and most recent PS5 games
Originally released in 2009 on PS3, this game was the very first representative of the “Souls” genre from FromSoftware. At the time, Sony was looking for a competitor to Oblivion but could not find any studio ready to take on the challenge. Hidetaka Miyazaki then took his chance and laid the foundations for an entire genre.
The remake, launched with the PS5 in 2020, has not changed anything at the heart of the gameplay: no easy mode, no difficulty overhaul, just a few comfort adjustments. What has changed, however, is everything else. The settings were recreated from scratch, the animations refined, and the soundtrack completely re-recorded. Result: a visual slap that still rivals the best current AAA.
On Reddit, a player recently asked: “What are the best free or PS Plus games with next-gen graphics?” The majority of responses cited this title without hesitation.
Why you should (still) give it a chance
Yes, this game is difficult. And no, it will not suit all profiles. But for those who like challenges, or simply want to test the graphical limits of their console, the game is clearly worth launching.
Some players even say they prefer it to Elden Ring visually, thanks to its more careful finish, its tighter areas and its heavier atmosphere. There are also several bosses and areas that inspired the studio’s subsequent titles, which will delight fans of the license.
Available via the PlayStation Plus Extra subscription, the title requires no additional purchase. It may not be for everyone, but it is clearly a showcase of what the PS5 does best.
