The Witcher: Netflix officially announces the end of the series in 2026

The saga of Geralt of Rivia is coming to its conclusion. Netflix has confirmed that season 5 of The Witcher will be the last broadcast on the platform. The information appeared in the “coming soon” section of the official Netflix website, where the series is now listed as a release planned for 2026. This final season was filmed in direct continuity with season 4, released at the end of October 2025. A choice assumed by the creative team, who worked on these two chapters as a single narrative arc.

A season 5 designed as the last chapter

The official synopsis immediately sets the tone. “The end times are near: dark forces are aligning across the Continent with evil designs aimed at Ciri.” The tension reaches a fever pitch as the main characters find themselves faced with definitive issues.

“Even if Geralt and Yennefer can save their daughter and grant her final wish to reunite as a family, they will face obstacles – and enemies – they have never faced before.” This description suggests a dramatic and uncompromising conclusion.

Showrunner Lauren Hissrich had already explained that the last two seasons formed a coherent whole. “The Witcher team treated both seasons as one big, single story.”

A series marked by a continued drop in audience

If The Witcher had a spectacular launch in 2019, with 76 million households having watched season 1, the erosion of the audience was constant thereafter. Season 2 dropped to 18.5 million views, season 3 to 15.2 million. Season 4, the first without Henry Cavill in the role of Geralt, recorded only 7.4 million views over its first four days of broadcast. A figure in clear decline, which visibly weighed in Netflix’s decision to put an end to the series.

The replacement of Henry Cavill, a decisive turning point

The departure of Henry Cavill after season 3 had a profound impact on the series. Very involved in respecting Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, the actor left the project, leaving room for Liam Hemsworth to play Geralt of Rivia. This casting change divided fans and contributed to weakening the reception of the series. Despite Hemsworth’s investment, some of the public never embraced this transition.

A prepared rather than improvised conclusion

The fact that seasons 4 and 5 were filmed one after the other gives hope for a structured ending. Actor Joey Batey, who plays Jaskier, summed up the feeling by saying, “It’s a bit like season 4, part 1 and 2. That’s how I understood it.” Netflix seems to want to properly close The Witcher book, after several years of exploitation of the license. It remains to be seen whether this universe will continue to exist through other projects, or if this season 5 will mark a real end point.
