The price of consoles no longer follows the usual logic. Where previous generations saw their prices drop over time, the PlayStation 5 seems to be following an opposite trajectory. In Europe, a new increase could be announced in the coming weeks.
This situation is part of a global context marked by economic tensions. Sony had already justified a previous increase by “a difficult economic context, marked by high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates”, recognizing a decision that was “difficult to make”.
An ever more expensive PS5, a trend that is taking hold
Since its launch in 2020, the PS5 has never really benefited from a lasting price drop. On the contrary, several adjustments have been applied depending on the markets, including a recent increase last April. If a new increase is confirmed, it would be the second in less than a year. An unusual situation for the video game industry, historically accustomed to making its consoles more accessible over time. Even promotional periods, like Black Friday, only offered a temporary reprieve. Prices quickly returned to their initial level, leaving little room for consumers to save money.
Xbox and Nintendo also affected by price increases
The PS5 is not an isolated case. The Xbox Series On Nintendo’s side, the situation remains more stable for the moment. However, rising production costs could ultimately impact the future Switch 2. This generalized pressure is explained in particular by the increase in the price of components, but also by the logistical and monetary constraints which affect the entire technological sector.
A video game market under pressure for several months
The consequences of this inflation are not limited to consoles. The entire market is affected, with accessories, alternative consoles and even projects related to video game preservation impacted. Recent figures illustrate this difficulty. The market recorded its worst month since 1995 last November, a sign of a worrying slowdown. Inventory shortages, combined with rising prices, are making it even more difficult for many gamers to access consoles. A situation which could continue if economic conditions do not improve.
Towards a new reality for European players
If this new increase is confirmed, it would mark an additional stage in the evolution of the console market. European players could be among the first affected, as with previous increases applied outside the United States. In this context, buying a console is becoming an increasingly thoughtful decision, far from the impulsive purchase that once characterized new generation launches.
