Far from spectacular announcements and official teasers, it is often behind the scenes that the most interesting projects take shape. While Sony remains silent on the future of its hardware range, a rumor is stirring the gaming world: a major evolution of the PS Portal could be on the way.
The information comes from the well-known leaker KeplerL2which evokes on the NeoGAF forums a revised and corrected model of Sony’s portable terminal, initially launched in 2023. And the first leaks suggest a notable transformation.
Hardware that reaches a technological milestone
According to this source, the new version of PS Portal would be equipped with a OLED screena significant improvement over the current 1080p LCD panel. This improvement would be coupled with a 120Hz refreshcompared to 60 Hz so far. Enough to make a real difference in visual comfort and display fluidity.
“After the PS5 Pro at the end of 2024, the Portal could also be entitled to a new version, and no later than this year,” indicates KeplerL2, without specifying an exact date but suggesting that the announcement could take place very soon.
If this information is confirmed, Sony would align itself with the current standards already adopted by the OLED Steam Deck or the OLED switchtwo products praised for the quality of their screen. The Japanese firm would thus respond to a growing demand for premium portability.
PS Portal, more than just an accessory?
When PS Portal was released three years ago, it received mixed reactions. Presented as a remote streaming device for the PS5, its use remained limited to stable Wi-Fi connections. But over time, the product found its audience among gamers looking for a continuity of their PlayStation experience on the move.
The addition of an OLED screen could just take this device into a whole new category. Coupled with an increase in frequency, it would bring it closer to a hybrid portable console than a simple remote relay. A natural evolution in a market where the line between console, accessory and cloud gaming is blurring more and more every day.
An intermediate response to the vagueness around the PS6
Sony has always known how to spread out its product cycles with finesse. In full confusion around the release of the PS6 – delayed according to several analysts due to the DRAM memory crisis – the manufacturer could use this improved version of the PS Portal as a strategic bridge.
Rather than accelerating a major hardware launch, the Japanese firm would be banking on moving its existing product upmarket to maintain the attention of its user basewhile gently preparing the transition to a new generation.
Unanswered questions, but a clear trend
At this point, Sony has not made any official comment. The new generation PS Portal remains a rumor, even if the reliability of the source gives weight to the hypothesis. It also remains to be seen whether internal changes – processor, autonomy, compatibility – will accompany this redesign of the display.
But one thing is certain: if Sony takes action, this new version could completely reposition the PS Portal. No longer as a technical curiosity, but as an essential solution for mobile gamerswhile waiting for the real news on the next-gen scene.
