An explosive mix between roguelike and shoot’em up
Dark Scrolls presents itself as a pixel art dungeon scroller that combines the chaos and intensity of a shoot’em up with the progression and replayability of a roguelike. It should be noted that the term “dungeon scroller” is an unofficial term to describe a 2D dungeon crawler. The game focuses on nervous gameplay where reflexes and immediate decision-making will be essential to survive. Each party will propose Procedurally generated levels, hand-designed rooms, multiple branches and challenging bosses.
It will be possible to choose from nine playable characters. Each of them has unique skills, secondary objectives and customizable equipment. The casting promises to be particularly original as evidenced by certain descriptions in the press release such as the “robust berserker” or the “saxophonist rat”. Thus, each hero will offer a different way of approaching fights and runs.
Dark Scrolls can be played solo, in local co-op and in online co-op. The game will highlight synergies between players, with the possibility of supporting each other in combat, reviving each other or even combining abilities to trigger spectacular attacks.
Throughout the runs, you will collect piles of coins from enemies or in chests. This currency can be spent in a store run by Bruce & Goose. This will unlock new powers, devastating attacks and allies to summon. Visually, Dark Scrolls put on an old school pixel-perfect aesthetic with graphics inspired by games from the 80s/90s. The sound effects and music also promise to be in the same vein.
Dark Scrolls is expected this year on PC and Nintendo Switch.
