Sixteen years after its debut on Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is still receiving new content. Nintendo has just deployed, without warning, an update 1.4.0 on Nintendo Switch And Nintendo Switch 2 which adds a new element to the game: an additional chapter in the storybook, completely free. For a cult platformer that many considered static, seeing an official narrative expansion appear is surprising.
Released in 2010 on Wii then released as a compilation on Switch on October 2, 2025, Galaxy 2 above all seemed to benefit from a technical facelift. With patch 1.4.0, put online on April 29, 2026, Nintendo chose on the contrary to touch on the scenario, via a real epilogue centered on the Lumas and Rosalina. It remains to be seen what exactly this surprise update contains and how to access it on Switch and Switch 2.
Super Mario Galaxy 2: what is hidden in the new free epilogue of update 1.4.0?
This new chapter of the storybook takes place after the Final Chapter and acts as an epilogue. We once again follow the two Lumas Mari and Lu, while Rosalina meets a mysterious little girl, who fans interpret as a younger version of herself rather than another princess.
The tone is tender, with a sentence where Rosalina states: “The most powerful force in the galaxy is a heart that never gives up.” For many players, noted by IGN, it is a way for the character to speak to herself, compatible with Super Mario Galaxy, the film without rewriting anything.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 update: what concrete changes on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2?
Beyond the story, patch 1.4.0 brings several fixes presented as “adjustments to ensure a smoother gaming experience” on Nintendo Switch And Nintendo Switch 2. On the latter, the software must already be at least version 1.2.0 before applying this update.
Update 1.4.0 is free, with no additional paid content, and can be downloaded via the Internet from the console menu, by selecting the game then the update option. To see the new epilogue, you must first have unlocked the Final Chapter of the storybook, then complete any galaxy and obtain a Power Star.
Super Mario Galaxy 2: why does this free update make you want to restart the adventure?
Alongside the epilogue, a new piece of the soundtrack joins the application Nintendo Music, reserved for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. This theme linked to the final chapter is automatically added to the playlist Super Mario Galaxy 2at no additional cost.
The first feedback is enthusiastic. “A main Mario can still offer a touching story,” points out fan ToadlyToad, while Nerdofthewind explains that this chapter finally makes him accept Rosalina’s change in personality by showing her ready to turn the page towards a brighter future.
