On Steam, good deals often revolve around large licenses or promotional packs. This time, it’s a little first-person survival horror released in 2021 which is coming to players’ libraries for free, for a limited time. The full title does not necessarily appear in the top sellers, but the offer promises a real thrill without taking out the bank card.
This game is Depths Of Horror: Mushroom Daydeveloped by TakeThem.GamesA free horror game on Steam for a few days only. This twisted homage to National Mushroom Day begins as simple mushroom picking before plunging its hero into a network of creature-infested caves. Usually offered at 4.99 dollars, or around €5, it currently goes to €0, to keep forever.
A 2021 indie survival horror offered in free-to-keep mode
Released on June 16, 2021 on PC, Depths Of Horror: Mushroom Day never claimed to compete with blockbusters, but today it benefits from generally rather positive reviews on Steam. The game is offered with a 100% discount, in a free-to-keep offer: once added to your account before the end of the promotion, it remains permanently attached to your library, even if you download it later.
The window is tight: the game sheet mentions “Get it before April 6 at 10:00 a.m. to keep it for free”, we can read on the Steam page. A reminder that this is a limited time opportunity, ideal for expanding your library in one click without spending a single euro.
Mushroom picking that turns into an underground nightmare
It all begins during National Mushroom Day, when the protagonist decides to try mushroom picking for the first time. His walk takes him to an abandoned cabin, then to the entrance to a huge cave. Going down, he discovers a network of dark tunnels, inhabited by deformed creatures and strange human silhouettes, with a very marked psychological horror atmosphere.
The game is played in first person, with no real arsenal to defend yourself with. The heart of the experience is based on escaping, avoiding monsters and managing the tension that increases as you progress through the galleries. The developers promise lots of scripted events to avoid long moments of silent walking, with regular jumpscares to keep the pressure on.
Light configuration, spiders and lack of French: who is this Steam gift for?
Technically, Depths Of Horror: Mushroom Day remains very accessible: Windows 10, 2.4 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB of RAM, simple GeForce GTS 450 type graphics card and around 800 MB of space are enough. The caves were designed entirely by hand, without procedural generation, and update 1.5.0 deployed in early April 2026 improves movement speed, lighting and several visual elements.
On the other hand, the title offers neither interface nor dubbing in French, only English, simplified Chinese and Russian, with fortunately quite simple texts. The marked presence of spiders in caves may upset players prone to arachnophobia.
