PS6 at $999 and +50% expected: Sony’s next console could become a real luxury

Buying a game console has long been an accessible pleasure. This might not be the case for much longer. While gamers are already waiting for the next generation, the first estimates on the price of the PlayStation 6 and its competitors are starting to circulate, and they may come as a surprise.

The recent increase in the price of the PlayStation 5, with a Pro version priced at $899.99, already gives an overview of the trend. Behind these increases, a tense economic context and sharply rising production costs which directly impact manufacturers like Sony or Microsoft.

PS6, a price that could reach $999 according to experts

Sector analysts no longer hide their concerns. For some, the next generation of consoles could reach a symbolic milestone. “I think a price of $999 for at least one version of the PS6 is not impossible. »

This estimate is based on several factors, including the explosion in the cost of electronic components. DRAM and NAND memory, essential to the operation of modern consoles, has seen its price rise dramatically.

“As early as 2024, console manufacturers have indicated that any customs tax would have a major impact on prices. The cost of DRAM and NAND has jumped 80-90% since the start of 2026.”

A 50% increase expected for new generation consoles

Beyond the case of the PS6, the entire industry could be concerned. Projections suggest an overall increase in launch prices. “I predict that the next generation of consoles will be sold at a price 50% higher than the previous one. »

Such an increase would profoundly change access to video games on console. Where these machines were once a more affordable alternative to the PC, they could now be positioned in a much more premium segment.

Projects on the Microsoft side, notably around the code name Project Helix, could follow this same logic. More powerful consoles, but also much more expensive.

Are console video games becoming a luxury?

This development worries some experts, who speak of a profound change in model. “We are rapidly moving towards a world where a $1,000 console will become the norm and console gaming will be a luxury” This transformation can also be explained by broader geopolitical and economic factors. “The US administration’s relentless efforts to disrupt the global economy are backfiring, exactly as intended. »

Why Sony and Microsoft could still raise prices

Historically, consoles have often been sold at a loss, with manufacturers making up for it on sales of games and services. But this balance is becoming more fragile.

“They really don’t want to increase the price of their hardware, because this expense is generally heavily subsidized and the sale of games is the mainstay of their business model. »

Faced with rising costs, this strategy could evolve. The new generation consoles could thus mark a breakthrough, with much higher prices from their launch.
