Since January 9, PS Plus subscribers can recover for free Need for Speed Unboundthe latest installment in Electronic Arts’ legendary racing game franchise. The game is normally priced at €70 on the PlayStation Store, but it is available at no additional cost to all PS Plus members, whether they are on a plan Essential, Extra Or Premium. “For PlayStation Plus subscribers, a AAA game from EA, normally priced at $70, is now available for free”.
The offer is however limited in time: “Until February 3, all PS5 users with an active PS Plus subscription (regardless of their level) can download and keep Need for Speed Unbound”. Please note, the game is only available on PS5. Owners of a PS4 will not be able to benefit from it.
Need for Speed Unbound: a game more daring than it seems
Released on December 2, 2022Need for Speed Unbound stood out for its bold visual style, mixing realistic graphics and animated effects inspired by street art. “Need for Speed Unbound was released on December 2, 2022, a little over three years ago.”
Developed by Criterion Games, this title adopts a more stylized tone while retaining the fundamentals of the series: illegal races, chases with the police, advanced tuning, and punchy urban soundtrack. If it is not the most revolutionary racing game on the market, Unbound offers a solid, nervous and very accessible experience.
He gets a score of 77/100 on Metacriticmaking it a well-rated but not essential game. On the PlayStation Store, players give it a more modest rating of 3/5citing gameplay that is sometimes too arcadey and a lifespan that could be improved.
A cult franchise since 1994… on hiatus?
Need for Speed Unbound represents an important milestone in a saga born more than 30 years ago. “This is the 25th installment of this racing franchise, which dates back to 1994.” Cult titles like Most Wanted or Underground left their mark on previous generations, but the series has had its ups and downs over the years.
Unbound follows Need for Speed Heat (2019) and could well be the last game in the license for a while. EA has indeed decided to pause the series to redirect its resources towards other franchises. This gift to PS Plus subscribers then takes on a whole new meaning: a beautiful gateway to (re)discover a historic license, at a time when its future remains uncertain.
Why this PS Plus offer is a great opportunity
Downloading Need for Speed Unbound today means enjoying for free a game that is still young, visually refreshing, and with generous content both online and in single player. It’s also an opportunity to reconnect with a cult arcade racing franchise, without paying anything… as long as you’re a PS Plus subscriber. If you’ve been waiting for a good reason to discover this episode, now is the time. Because after the February 3, 2026the game will leave the PS Plus program and become paid again.
